Die Ruhr-Universität Bochum trauert um Prof. Dr. med. Herbert Viefhues: Der Pionier der Bioethik in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland starb am 8. März 2004 im Alter von 84 Jahren. Seit 1973 war Viefhues Professor für Sozialmedizin an der Medizinischen Fakultät der RUB, von 1980 bis 1982 Dekan der Fakultät. 1983 erhielt Viefhues das Bundesverdienstkreuz erster Klasse. Er war Initiator und Mitbegründer des Bochumer Zentrums für Medizinische Ethik e. V. (ZME) und des Arbeitskreises Medizinethik an der Ruhr-Universität.
